Beach Volleyball Defense Footwork Commonly Mistaught?
Published at : September 26, 2021
Beach volleyball defense is a deep subject that can be looked at from a lot of different perspectives. Defensive footwork, spike defense, ball control, defensive strategy, defensive emergency moves, shot defense, pulling from a block, defensive decisions among others are all topics worth discussing, looking into and learning more about if you want to become a better beach volleyball defender.
In this video we will take a deeper look at one small part of those topics - the first steps of the footwork used to run up soft shots. Unfortunately in my experience a lot of coaches around the world teach this subject in a way that actually doesn't match up with what the pro's do (or amateurs, or anyone who does whatever is natural for the body to do for that matter), so I thought it is time for someone to make a video about this topic and hopefully provide some slowing down of the "misinformation train." Please share this video with people you see teach these steps in the other way, as well as to people who might benefit from this information.

Examples of pro's using the technique I show in the video:
NOTE: Of course, all of these examples are just confirmation of my beliefs and all of these examples will confirm what I am saying, which is a natural effect from me choosing the examples. Therefore, this can't be definitive proof that professional players never do the steps in some other way during these situations, but what I am saying is that I have never seen this happen, and I have not been able to find examples of that. If you would happen to have any examples that would disprove what I teach in this video, please post them in the comment section below so that we can all learn from them, sharpen our volleybrains and get one step closer to true understanding of our sport!
TIP: Use , and . buttons on a computer to do frame by frame on Youtube.
Examples where players stay still before the ball is hit and then initiate movement with the "jolt" step:
