Published at : November 12, 2021
Let’s face it, Gi-Hun, aka the infamous Player 456, might have won the Squid Game, but one of the most memorable characters in the latest South Korean culture phenomenon is actually Kang Sae Byeok, the North Korean defector, aka Player 067. She is feisty, she loves her little brother, and she is fighting and making ends meet just to make their family whole again. Forget about Sang Woo, Deok Su, or even the game master himself. Sae Byeok is the real tough guy in the series. Having endured all five games before being betrayed by Sang Woo and being deliberately cut across the abdomen, Kang Sae Byeok might have even won the Squid Game. She has the toughness and wit of Sang Woo but her heart is as good as Gi-hun. Basically, she is the heroine we never got to see in the ending. But now, she is just one of the many tragic fallen heroes. We don’t know much about her character, but we know for sure that her character is very significant. We know she comes from the north with her brother—the only two remaining family members—and that her brother is separated from her and living in an orphanage. We know she had some kind of personal and/or professional relationship with gangster Jang Deok-su. And we know her motivation for playing the game: she wants to get her brother out of the orphanage and improve both their lives. Today, we will be talking about everything you need to know and might have missed about Kang Sae Byeok’s character in Squid Game. First, what's the significance of player 067 in the games?
Viewers get to know the character of Sae Byeok as a strong female lead who would do anything to make her family whole again.
In the Squid Game, only one player can emerge victorious, after all, and while we're happy Gi-hun is the one who lives to fight another day, his win came at the cost of 455 other lives. Out of all these losses, the death of Kang Sae Byeok hits the hardest for many, thanks to Jung Ho-yeon's breakout performance and the character's heartbreaking backstory. Initially introduced as a pickpocket, Number 067 joins the game to help her family. Instead, Sae Byeok actively tries to hide it when she's around other South Korean players. But why would Sae Byeok hide her North Korean accent in the first place? In an early scene where she visits her younger brother, Sae Byeok speaks. The accent becomes less pronounced as she speaks with other players in the game, which may portray the character’s attempt at assimilating into South Korean society. This tracks within the context of the show as well. More than once, Sae Byeok is subjected to unkind remarks – for example, when Jang Deok-su calls her a "spy".
Like many of the other deaths in the Squid Game, Kang Sae Byeok’s way of dying has been foreshadowed in the earlier episodes too.
Sae Byeok should have been the Squid Game winner
The series might have focused on the kind-hearted Gi-hun early on as the first episode showed his life. But Sae-Byeok had the potential to win or even overpower Gi-Hun. In almost any other version of this story, she would have — but Squid Game writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk refuses to challenge the game structure. In most battle royale or dangerous-game stories, the skills and defiance Sae-byeok demonstrates would have marked her as the clear winner. Sae-byeok covers her mouth to avoid being gassed. The rules can’t be applied if nobody is aware you’re breaking them, and Sae-byeok cleverly navigates them to get an advantage. This ability to navigate the rules would mark Sae-byeok as the one to watch.
Sae Byeok has the best character development in the series
We may remember her in a good way, being a good friend, a trusted companion to Gi-Hun, and a witty survivor. However, if you look back, Sae Byeok was nothing like any of that. She pickpocketed Gi-Hun at the very first episode, she almost left him in the streets all tied up from the first game, and she refused to be part of any group during the riots. But later on, she learned how to trust Gi-Hun.
