Mon killings: Hundreds of Tizit residents protest, demand repeal of AFSPA

Hundreds of residents of Tizit under Mon district of Nagaland took to the streets to condemn the murder of 14 civilians at the hands of security forces during a mass protest rally organised by the Tizit civil societies on Saturday.

The protesters began the march from Pentom Junction to Nagaland check gate, demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA).

Men, women and students who took part in the protest rally shouted slogans “Para force, Go back”, “Repeal AFSPA”, “Amit Shah, liar” and “we want justice.”

In a short ceremony at the Nagaland gate near the Assam-Nagaland border, protesters burned effigies of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Indian army.

Former president of the Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK) Tizit unit (a women’s body), Manya, questioned why the security forces have killed innocent Indian citizens.

“Are they not ashamed to take the lives of the innocent people? Is the Paramilitary blind? Can they not differentiate between militants and the public? Amit Shah should not only make statements but come to the spot. We are Indians, and it is important to see us as Indians,” she said.

Speaking to EastMojo, James, Tizit Area Students’ Union (TASU) president said that the protest was organised by the Tizit civil society organisations to exert pressure on the government to deliver justice. As per the demands made by the Konyak apex organisations, he said that justice should be delivered without delay.

“If the government fails to give justice the given time and date, I cannot assure anything else. But definitely, we won’t stop the public from coming out to the street and going chaotic. Already the public and the citizen are extremely outraged,” he said.

He informed that the public has questioned why no action has been taken so far.

“As law-abiding citizens, as educated people, we want to maintain peace. But our yearning for peace should not be taken for granted,” he said.

He then said that the Central government and the state government must deliver justice as per the demands made by the Konyak tribal organisations.
